The Ultimate Cleaning Regime
Cleaning a chicken coop is hard work.
It may not be a glamorous job on a homestead, but it’s essential. I’ve faced many challenges while cleaning the coop.
In time, my family and I found a regular routine.
Here’s how we make it work:
- Step 1: Evacuate the chickens out of the coop before you begin because they’re bound to get in the way. Also, strip the coop bare for deep cleaning sessions.
- Step 2: Sweep away the dust and any apparent dirt, feathers, and excrement. Be very thorough during this step.
- Step 3: Hose the coop down and make sure to wash away any leftover residue. I advise you to scrub the coop with cleaning products for better results.
- Step 4: Air dry the coop after washing it. This step helps keep odor, pests, and certain diseases at bay! Sprinkle with wood ashes or garden lime on the floor prior to adding new bedding to reduce any odor.
- Step 5: Refill nest boxes and bedding on the floor. You should also restock feeders and place freshwater in the drinkers after cleaning them too. Fresh food and water are essential for raising healthy birds.
- Step 6: Consider adding a nesting herb blend in your nest boxes.
Once all this is done, your coop is ready to welcome the flock again. If you need more information,
Pro tip: Always pick a warm, sunny day to clean your coop, as it is easier to air dry!
