What This Really Is….
This project involves turning an old sweater sleeve into a cover for a square tissue box. So, keep an eye out for any old sweaters that you don’t need anymore, like one with stains or tears.
These covers are fun to make and can be used as seasonal gifts with various sweater sleeves. My examples are Christmas-themed, using cozy wool colors and patterns.
The best part is that you can likely create two or more tissue box covers from one old sweater! With two sleeves and the main part of the sweater, you can make plenty of covers. The sleeve covers are the easiest to make.

What You Will Need:
To make this, you need 2 or 3 things:
- One old sweater sleeve
- One box of tissues
- A large darning needle (if using the sewing method)
- 3-ply yarn (if using the sewing method)
These covers can be made from:
- Wool Sweaters
- Cotton Sweaters
- Acrylic Sweaters
- Fleece Jacket or Pullover (not too fuzzy)
Pro Tip: Find Old Sweaters by……..
- Check your drawers and closets.
- Search for used sweaters at garage sales.
- Look through the bins at thrift shops and second-hand stores.

Basic Instructions:
- Make sure the sweater is clean.
- Lay the sweater out flat and smooth out the sleeves.
- Measure 12 inches from the cuff of the sleeve.
- The width where you cut the sweater sleeve must be approx 8 inches wide to fit over the tissue box (see photos).
- Carefully cut the sleeve along the 12″ line.

Next, decide if you want to sew or not. Here are two examples in the photo.
First Method: No-Sew Method
For the no-sew method, keep the cuff of the sleeve as it is if it’s in good condition. Slip the sleeve over a tissue box and tuck the raw edge about an inch inside. This will create a neat bottom edge around the box.

The Second Method: Simple Stitching
This method of simple stitching is super easy, too. Take a look at these photos to see the way the top edge is folded down and just slightly tucked under with a large running stitch to secure the edge.

Quick extra idea:
You can use the body of an old sweater to make more tissue box covers. This will take a little extra time, but it’s possible.
Cut the sweater into a piece that is 12 inches by 26 inches. Sew a seam to create a “sleeve,” then finish the top and bottom edges using a running stitch as described in the second method of Simple Stitching.
You can make up to four tissue box covers from one sweater. That’s great!
You can turn an old sweater into four useful gifts.
