Tissue Box Covers:
This project is simply repurposing an old sweater sleeve to fit over a square cube tissue box.
These are pretty fun because they can be made for seasonal gifts with different types of old sweater sleeves. My two examples just happen to be for Christmas with wintry looking wool colors and patterns.
The super exciting thing is that you can probably make 2 or more tissue box covers from 1 old sweater! 2 sleeves + the main part of the sweater = lots of tissue box covers! (the sleeve covers will be the easiest to make)
What You Will Need:
This is pretty simple as you will need 2 or 3 things:
- One old sweater sleeve
- One cube box of tissues
- Large Darning Needle for Sewing Method
- 3 Ply-Yarn for Sewing Method
Find any type of old sweater……like one with stains or tears on the front; one that is no longer useful to you.
These covers can be made from:
- Wool Sweaters
- Cotton Sweaters
- Acrylic Sweaters
- Fleece Jacket or Pullover (not too fuzzy)
Pro Tip: Find Old Sweaters by……..
- Looking through your drawers and closets
- Rummaging used sweaters at Garage Sales
- Searching through the bins at Thrift Shops
- And, at Second-hand Stores
Basic Instructions:
- Make sure the sweater is clean
- Lay the sweater out flat and smooth out the sleeves
- Measure 12 inches from the cuff of the sleeve
- The width where you cut the sweater sleeve must be approx 8 inches wide to fit over the tissue box (see photos)
- Carefully cut the sleeve along the 12″ line
Next, you need to make a decision to sew a little bit or not to sew. I have these 2 examples in this photo.
The First Method: No-Sew Method
The first method is the simple leave the cuff of the sleeve as is as long as it is in good shape. Slip the sleeve over your box of tissues and simple tuck the raw edge of the sleeve about an inch inside the box. This will give you a finished looking bottom edge around the box.
The Second Method: Simple Stitching
This method of simple stitching is super easy, too. Take a look at these photos to see the way the top edge is folded down and just slightly tucked under with a large running stitch to secure the edge.
Quick extra idea:
Think about ways to use the body of the sweater to make additional tissue box covers. This method will take a bit more time but it is doable.
Simply cut the sweater into 12 inches by 26 inches. You will need to stitch a seam to make a “sleeve” and then finish the top and bottom edges with the running stitch as noted in the second method of Simple Stitching.
You might be able to get 4 tissue box covers out of one old sweater…..Sweet!
Four nice, practical, useful gifts from almost next to nothing. This is good!!!!
