Freezing Whole

To freeze an avocado, you don’t need to peel off its skin or remove the pit beforehand. It is best to freeze avocados in their original form to preserve their freshness. Here is how to freeze avocados at home.

  1. Wash avocados thoroughly with water to remove any dirt or dust piling up on their skin. Leave them on your kitchen slab for a few minutes to let them dry completely. You can also pat dry using a dry cloth to speed up the process.
  2. Use a cling wrap around each fruit to cover them up for storing.
  3. Next, put each wrapped fruit into a Ziploc bag and seal it properly.
  4. Store the Ziploc bags in the freezer. You can freeze them for up to 6 months. In some cases, they may lose freshness in 3 months. It is better to keep a check on their condition before using them in the future.

Sometimes, while making guacamole or any other mouth-watering dish, you may realize that you need a fewer number of avocados. If you have already cut the rest of the avocados in halves, you can easily store them in the freezer instead of wasting them in the garbage. Here is a list of steps you can follow to keep avocados cut in halves.

  1. Leave the skin on each avocado along with the pit in one of the halves.
  2. Use 2 to 3 drops of lemon juice to sprinkle on each open half of the avocados.
  3. Use cling wrap to wrap the pieces.
  4. Put the pieces in Ziploc bags and seal them tightly.
  5. Store the Ziploc bags in the freezer.

When Freezing Mashed

You can follow these steps to freeze mashed avocados.

  1. Wash the avocados with water to clean their skin.
  2. Cut each avocado into half and peel them while removing the pit.
  3. Use a fork or a potato masher to mash the avocados. You can use a food processor or a hand blender to achieve similar results.
  4. Add 4 to 5 drops of lemon juice depending on the number of avocados used. You can add more lemon juice for a large number of avocados.
  5. Transfer the mashed avocados in Ziploc bags or a freezer-safe container and place the bag or container into the freezer.
  6. Flatten bags out, release all the air and close tightly.
  7. Stack bags on a cookie sheet and freeze until firm.
  8. Then, label and store for 3 to 6 months.
  9. These flattened bags of mashed avocado store nicely in a stack in the freezer.

Frozen avocados are as good as freshly picked avocados in the summertime. For best results, ensure that the avocados are ripe enough to eat.
