STEPS TO MAKING DRINKING CHOCOLATE

This homemade hot beverage can be can be made in 5 quick and easy steps. It’s up to you whether you prefer using a stovetop or microwave oven, and we have mentioned methods for both ways accordingly.

Before starting, assemble the following ingredients:

  • Chocolate chunks or Chocolate chips (preferably 55%+ cocoa)
  • Sugar
  • Whole Fat Milk* or full fat coconut milk
  • Salt
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Instant Coffee (powder or crystals)
  • Whipping Cream – optional
  • Marshmallows – optional

*To reduce the fat content, please use fat-free or 1% milk.

METHOD – STOVE TOP

  1. Pour 2 cups of milk into a saucepan and heat to a simmer on the stove.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of chocolate chunks or chips in simmering milk and keep stirring while it melts evenly. Do not boil!
  3. Blend well to form a smooth consistency and add 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and half a teaspoon of instant coffee, if desired, and stir well.
  4. After 2 minutes, turn off the stove and pour the mouth-watering, hot drinking chocolate into a mug.
  5. Top it off with some whipping cream to add a luxurious finishing touch to your drinking chocolate. If you prefer more sweetness, top it off with some marshmallows and let them melt in your drinking chocolate.

Makes Two Large Intense Cups or Four Moderate Cups

METHOD – MICROWAVE OVEN

  1. Pour 2 cup of milk into a microwave-safe container or mug and heat it at the highest temperature for 1.5 to 2 minutes.
  2. Chop 1/2 cup of chocolate into small pieces and add to the simmering milk. Heat it for 1 minute and stir well until chocolate is melted. Watch so the mixture does not overflow.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and half a teaspoon of instant coffee, if desired, while stirring until it forms a smooth and creamy consistency.
  4. Pour the hot drinking chocolate into mugs of your choice.
  5. Add some whipping cream on top, followed by marshmallows, and let it melt and set for a minute. Serve hot.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS

In case you want to make a fat-free version, you can opt for low-fat pasteurized milk. Instead of whole milk, unsweetened cocoa powder instead of regular chocolate, artificial sweetener instead of sugar, and skip the garnishing steps.
