Different Types of Garlic
Elephant Garlic
This type of garlic produces a large clove that is the size of a man’s hand. Elephant garlic has a mild flavor and is ready to harvest 90 days after planting.
Plant individual cloves in prepared soil in the fall before the first frost. Plant the clove 10 inches apart and 4 inches deep. Moisten soil and mulch with 6 inches of straw.
Siberian Garlic
This type produces a small to medium bulb that is covered with a multitude of papery skins that deepen in a purplier color with each layer.
The best planting time for Siberian Garlic is right before the first frost of fall. Separate the cloves and soak them in water for 2 hours before planting. Plant the cloves, pointy side up, 2 inches deep in soil that has been amended with compost.
Cover with 6 inches of straw and water every 3-4 days. Siberian garlic will be ready to harvest in about 200 days.

Soft Necked Garlic
This is the garlic type you will find most often in supermarkets. The ‘neck’ is the green shoot that grows above the ground. Their stems remain soft and flexible, that’s why they are called ‘soft necked’.
Soft necked garlic produces many cloves in each head and is ideal for growing in warm climates.
Plant soft neck varieties in the fall before the first frost. It will be ready to harvest in 90 days.
Try a Hard Necked Garlic
Hard necked garlic has above ground shoots that are hard and the garlic flavor has subtle differences that reflect the soil in which they were grown.

The great thing about Hard necked garlic is cold hardy and is ideal for growing in climates that have long, cold winters.
Plant it in the late fall before the first frost and harvest in late spring.
Spring Garlic
This type is planted in the spring and harvested in the summer. It resembles green onions and has a very mild garlic flavor. You may plant any type of garlic
