HOW to MAKE HOMEMADE GRAVY
Want to learn how to make a homemade gravy? It is super easy. Here is a simple, delicious “how to make gravy recipe” for any home cook!
Making gravy seems to scare a lot of home cooks…but no more! This recipe has just 3 ingredients! And, for some reason, adding gravy to any meal seems to make everything more special.
You can use this recipe for homemade brown gravy, but it also works well for chicken gravy and turkey gravy! I use Einkorn flour, but this recipe works well with all types of wheat flour.

Homemade Gravy Recipe Perfect for:
- Roasted Meats

Once you learn the basic steps, you will want to make gravy from scratch!
This basic recipe is made with flour without milk. I have also included recipes at the end of this post for gravy made with cornstarch.
How to Make Homemade Gravy:
Ingredients:
~4 Cups Stock and Pan Drippings from Roast, Chicken or Turkey*
~Organic Unsalted Butter 4 Tablespoons or use regular butter
~4 Tablespoons Unbleached Natural White Flour (I like to use Einkorn Flour.)
Salt and Pepper to Taste
*Add additional Homemade or Canned Broth if necessary to equal 4 cups of liquid
Instructions:
- Carefully ladle out the stock from the bottom of the Crock Pot or Roaster Pan.
- Ladle it into a 4 quart measuring cup or bowl.
- Add additional water or broth to the equal exactly 4 cups of liquid
- Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a cast iron skillet or heavy pan over medium heat.
- When the butter is melted, whisk in 4 tablespoons of all purpose flour stirring until the flour & butter are combined
- This butter and flour mixture is called a Roux.
- Carefully and slowly pour the 4 cups of liquid into the skillet or pan.
- Whisk constantly while adding the liquid. Stirring helps prevent lumps in the gravy.
- Whisk the mixture and bring to a slow boil. As the gravy begins to boil, it will thicken.
- Continue to stir the mixture for 2 minutes after it begins to boil.
- Taste and adjust seasonings, maybe a little more salt and pepper. But, make sure to taste first.
- Carefully pour the gravy back into the Crock Pot if serving with a roast and vegetables
- Or carefully pour your gravy into a serving pitcher or gravy boat
- Serve Warm
- Refrigerator any leftovers.
NOTES:
- Extra brown homemade gravy makes a wonderful basis for soup!
- Also, this gravy recipe can be made with just water, butter, and flour. Simply season with salt and pepper.
- For sausage gravy: make the basic recipe with butter or sausage drippings and substitute milk instead of broth, then add precooked breakfast sausage and serve over toast or biscuits!
- Secret ingredient: If you need to know how to make brown gravy and you have a white gravy with just the butter, flour, and water… simply add 1/4 teaspoon of instant coffee! Ta-da…beautiful homemade brown gravy!!
- To make a sausage gravy, substitute milk for the broth or water and then add your precooked crumbled sausage. Serve over toast or biscuits.
- Try using bone broth for the liquid instead of broth or water.

GRAVY RECIPE without FLOUR OR MILK:
Ingredients:

Instructions:
- Pour the 4 cups of juice into a 4 quart saucepan.
- Add the butter or drippings and bring to a slow boil
- Combine cornstarch with 1/2 cup of water. Stir until mixed.
- Slowly pour the cornstarch and water mixture into the broth
- Continue to boil 1 to 2 minutes on medium heat until the mixture thickens
- Serve Warm
THICKEN SOUPS or STEWS:
To thicken soups or stews without flour
- Mix 2 tablespoon of organic cornstarch or arrowroot powder with 1/2 cup of water.
- Slowly pour this mixture into your soup or stew while stirring constantly.
Bring this mixture to a slow boil for 1 to 2 minutes. It will thicken as it boils.
Please Note:
Do not add cornstarch directly to soup or stews, as it will clump together and not dissolve properly.
